For automatic transmissions, damaged or worn clutch plates, transmission bands, or solenoid packs are often the culprit and one or more of these need to be replaced. Replace the clutch, and often the problem goes away. In manual transmissions, slippage is frequently caused by a worn-out clutch. In most cases, however, a transmission slip fix requires a visit to a transmission repair shop. If there are no slips, no transmission fluid leaks, and the fluid that was left in your vehicle didn’t smell burnt or look opaque, then you might be all right. You can go for a slow and measured test drive after that. Check your transmission fluid levels-as you should do at least once a month-and top it up if necessary. A low level of transmission fluid can contribute to just about any transmission problem. Eventually, it will fail and require replacement. If the torque converter starts to go bad, as is common on the 2006 Jeep Liberty, you’ll notice your transmission shuddering and slipping. How do you do that? Is it something you can do on your own? Probably not. Automatic transmissions transfer power from the engine through the torque converter and to the drive wheels. OK, so if your transmission starts slipping, it needs to be fixed right away. If your transmission starts slipping, you must fix it as soon as possible. This is not a problem you can afford to ignore. Gear Shifting If you try to upshift your gear and it falls back to a lower gear or refuses to upshift (switch to another gear), it is a sign that your transmission is slipping. But what happens when you’re on the highway? Maybe you’re speeding up to merge with traffic after completing the on-ramp and then-bam-your transmission slips into neutral. You want it to be in drive, don’t slip to neutral! So, you shift back to drive and you’re on your merry way. In this scenario, the transmission slip is annoying. For example, you reverse out of your driveway and then shift to drive, but seconds later, the transmission slips into neutral. Transmission slips most commonly occur after you have switched gears. Essentially, you tell your transmission to be in one gear, but it slips into another. It’s called a transmission “slip” because it slips out of gear. If you haven’t, you’re fortunate, because a slipping transmission can be very unnerving.
